Whenever you move into a new household, the first thing to always take care of is to uphold the security of your home. As a homeowner, you wouldn’t want a random person to just waltz into your home like it’s theirs, or have a burglar steal your personal belongings just because your locks weren’t secure enough to withstand the intrusion. Hence, upholding the security of your home is a great investment in order to give you that peace of mind that no one but you can open the doors to your new humble abode, and there’s nothing better than any lock in the market right now than using a deadbolt lock system.
For those who are unfamiliar with what a deadbolt is or how it works, it essentially is a locking mechanism that makes a door very resistant to entry by only configuring a correct key so that it can be turned into the open position. Unlike its spring bolt lock counterparts, deadbolts are much more resistant to intrusions and forced entries, as a deadbolt cannot be opened without the actual correct key.
Deadbolt Locks have a variety of types, which include classroom-function locks, where the thumb-turn only unlocks the door, the exit-only deadbolt which does not have an external cylinder, and a push-button deadbolt which can be either mechanical or electrical. However, the cylinder operated types, which could be either single or double cylinder, are the most conventional with residential properties. If you are still on the fence about what type of deadbolt lock system fits your needs the best, our team of professional locksmiths will help you receive the necessary information you need in order for you to make your decision on what suits your needs.

However, this is your home’s security that we are talking about; and one wrong move can risk you locking yourself in or out of your home if you don’t accurately install them. It can lead to other complications as well and leaves your home at risk of being burglarized instead which is counterproductive. The process of installing a deadbolt lock usually involves following the instructions provided by their manufacturers and providing a template in order for it to be installed properly. The templates that are being provided are designed to be versatile and work with doors of various thickness, and they recommend that your deadbolt should be at least 6” above your doorknob. The technician will take this into consideration, and will then cut a hole for the deadbolt on your door using a hole saw. A hole will also be drilled on the side of your door with a spade bit. The bolt will then be dry-fitted into the hole and traced around the faceplate the technician made. A wood chisel will then be used in order to mortise the area until the faceplate fits appropriately.
Pilot holes will then be drilled, and your bolt will be secured to the door itself with the use of screws. After that, the technician will dry-fit the cylinder and thumb-turn plate in order to ensure that the pieces fit perfectly. Both the interior and exterior sides of the deadbolt are then finalized in place and are fastened with the use of screws. The strike plate is also secured and the end of the bolt is marked with paint.
The process of installing a deadbolt lock involves precision and experience, both of which our technicians at Sherlock Locksmith have in their skill set.
